What is a MERV Rating?

If you have an HVAC system in your home, there are specific details you know to be right about your unit — without giving too much thought. From regularly scheduling tune-up appointments (to help your unit run efficiently) to replacing the filter (to help block out harmful airborne debris), the list goes on and on — but what about considering the MERV rating on that filter?

If you aren’t too sure what a MERV rating is, or what to look for, don’t worry; we’re here to help!

What is a MERV Rating?

Without further ado, let’s dive into the topic at hand: what exactly is a MERV rating? MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, happens to be a rating given to HVAC system filters that rates how big or small the pores are within them. For example, the larger the number is, the smaller the pores will be. On the other hand, the lower the number is, the bigger the pores will be; it’s that simple!

How do I Choose a MERV Rating?

When it comes to selecting an HVAC filter at your local home improvement store, you’ll want to not only find a filter that has the proper dimensions to fit your unit (that’s extremely important so that it can work efficiently) but one that has the correct MERV rating. Typically, you can locate the MERV rating on the outside of the package of the filter.

Once the rating is located, there will be a number between 1-16. When choosing the perfect filter for your home, you’ll want to find one with a rating between 7 and 12. If you happen to pick something a little higher than 12, there’s a chance you could cause strain on your system — and that’s never a good thing.
